President Ruto Visits Uhuru Kenyatta in Gatundu, Discusses IEBC Challenges
President William Ruto and Former President Uhuru Kenyatta

President William Ruto met with former President Uhuru Kenyatta at his Gatundu home on December 9, marking their second meeting within the month.

Their first encounter took place in Embu during the consecration of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u, illustrating a turn towards cooperative dialogue between the two leaders. During the meeting, Ruto expressed appreciation for Kenyatta’s role in ensuring a seamless transition of power following the 2022 Presidential elections. He emphasized the solid foundation established by Kenyatta, which has allowed the current administration to advance initiatives within the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation agenda.

“President Ruto thanked Uhuru Kenyatta for laying a strong foundation that enabled the government to implement key programs under the Bottom-Up Economic transformation agenda,” the statement from State House reads.

The agenda for their discussion included urgent matters concerning the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), particularly the resolution of judicial obstacles that have delayed its reconstitution. In a rare display of unity, both leaders also called on Kenyans to support Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Chair. The timing of this meeting is significant, coinciding with escalating political tensions in the Mount Kenya region, a key battleground for future elections.

Kenyatta’s re-emergence on the public stage, highlighted by his attendance at the recent wedding of Kalonzo Musyoka’s daughter, signals a shift from his previous low-profile stance. Musyoka, a well-known critic of Ruto’s administration, publicly acknowledged Kenyatta’s presence at the event, reinforcing their relationship. This meeting occurs amid speculation regarding a potential cabinet reshuffle, with reports suggesting that several cabinet secretaries may face dismissal.

The renewed interest in Kenyatta’s influence highlights the dynamic political landscape as leaders prepare for the forthcoming 2027 general elections. Kalonzo Musyoka has explicitly stated his intent to run for the presidency, positioning himself as a significant opponent in the electoral arena, particularly with the complex political affiliations at play in the Mount Kenya region.

Furthermore, since the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, Musyoka has actively criticized Ruto’s government, especially concerning alleged frustrations experienced by Gachagua.
