The tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of General Francis Ogolla has not only shed light on his remarkable achievements and personal qualities but has also delivered a glimpse of his family.
While the nation mourns this profound loss, many have shifted their focus towards honouring the memory of the late general and the remarkable woman who raised his children. One such individual is Lorna Omondi, Ogolla’s daughter, whose personal and professional trajectory is nothing short of inspiring. Lorna currently holds the prestigious position of Head of Operational Excellence for the DC Equipment Supply Chain at Google in the San Francisco Bay Area, a role she has occupied for over a year.
Her responsibilities encompass a wide range of critical tasks including overseeing business operations, managing operations, developing strategic plans, and handling data management systems, tools, and processes. As the head, Lorna provides leadership and program management to support the vision, transformation, and overall direction of the equipment supply chain team. Before her current role, Lorna spent two years, from 2001 to 2003, working as a senior lead in supply planning at Google Data centres. Her expertise in investment analysis is equally impressive, having led a team that developed global recommendations for leadership regarding data centre options, including where and when to build them.
In her previous roles as a Management and Economic Consultant at Greylock McKinnon Associates and an analyst at Charles River Associates, Lorna implemented linear optimization algorithms to assist clients in understanding the impact of electric power projects. She also conducted analyses to help clients determine the best location for their investments and presented the potential economic benefits. Lorna’s educational journey began at Kenya High School and continued at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.
She then pursued a Master’s degree with a specialization in Operations at the University of Cambridge, a program that included various areas of study including dynamic programming, operations strategy, revenue management, uncertainty and risk management, consumer behaviour, strategies, econometrics, statistics and data analysis, decision analysis, organizational behaviour, inventory management, contract theory, game theory, queuing theory, forecasting, and simulation. In 2015, Lorna successfully completed a master’s program at Stanford University, specializing in Management Science and Engineering.
The curriculum included courses such as Linear and Non-Linear Optimization, Decision Analysis, Stochastic Modeling, Small and Big Data Analysis, Supply Chain Management, Engineering Risk Analysis, Probabilistic Analysis, Corporate Finance, Machine Learning, and Data visualization. Lorna fondly remembers her father as someone who constantly sought excellence possessed great empathy, and was a highly effective leader and statesman. As the nation mourns the loss of General Ogolla, his daughter’s remarkable achievements serve as a testament to his enduring legacy and the resilience of his family.
