Bura’s Ultimatum: Turn In Your Guns Now, or We’ll Take Them by Force

The authorities in Bura Constituency have launched a significant initiative to address the escalating violence in the region.

A 48-hour amnesty period has been announced during which residents are encouraged to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms. This precedes a planned forceful disarmament operation and highlights the government’s determination to restore peace and security in the area. Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha is spearheading this effort. During her recent tour of Bangale Ward, she emphasized the importance of community cooperation with security agencies. Commissioner Onyancha stressed the need to locate all illegal weapons, noting that the area had been free from gunfire for an extended period until recent events.

The urgency of this disarmament campaign was exposed by a series of killings that occurred on October 5. These incidents, attributed to organized criminal elements, have prompted a swift and decisive response from the authorities. Ms Onyancha has called upon the public to assist law enforcement in apprehending the perpetrators, warning that the upcoming disarmament exercise will be comprehensive. To ensure the effectiveness of this operation, a multi-agency team has been assembled. This collaborative effort includes members from the National Police Service, the General Service Unit, the National Intelligence Service, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Their combined expertise and resources are expected to facilitate a thorough removal of illegal firearms from the region. Local support for the disarmament initiative appears to be strong with community elders such as Mr Daud Mahat expressing their backing for government intervention. They also acknowledge the limitations of traditional conflict resolution methods in addressing the current situation. The targeted areas for this security operation include Madogo, Vango, Bangale, Nanighi, and Bura.

These localities have experienced significant unrest over the past six weeks, with at least ten fatalities reported since the onset of the skirmishes. The issue of illegal firearms extends beyond Bura Constituency, representing a persistent challenge across Kenya and many parts of Africa. The proliferation of small arms has long been recognized as a significant contributor to regional instability and crime. In response, various disarmament campaigns and community sensitization programs have been implemented with varying degrees of success.

The African Union has acknowledged the destabilizing impact of small arms and light weapons, leading to continent-wide initiatives such as the “Silencing the Guns” campaign. This effort aims to reduce the flow of illicit arms and promote peace and security across the African continent.
