Traders are counting losses after an inferno razed a large section of the Marikiti market in Nairobi’s central business district.
Stalls used by traders to store their stock were reduced to ashes in the Friday morning fire whose cause remains unknown.
Traders linked the incident to the current land ownership dispute pitting them against Kenya Railways, with some alleging that the fire occurred in the presence of police officers.
The incident came a day after Kenya Railways allegedly evicted some traders from a section of the market it claims ownership to.
Starehe MP Charles ‘Jaguar’ blamed the fire on Kenya Railways even as he promised to get to the bottom of the incident.
“I’ve heard your cries, and I’ll voice your concerns in Parliament. We will get answers. We will hold these arsonists accountable. Kenya Railways, a state corporation, cannot commit such injustices without repercussions,” Jaguar said through Twitter.
