US Issues Travel Advisory to Kenya over Covid-19, Terrorism

The US government has issued a travel advisory to Kenya, citing an increased risk of contracting Covid-19.

The Level 3 travel health notice dated August 6th, 2020 was issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), according to a statement published on the Department of State website.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to COVID-19.”

“Kenya has lifted stay at home orders, and resumed some transportation options and business operations,” the notice read.

As of Friday, Kenya had reported a total of 25,138 cases of Covid-19, 11,118 recoveries, and 413 fatalities.

Further to this, US nationals are asked to exercise increased caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping.

They are warned not to travel to counties near the Kenya-Somalia border and the coast including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Lamu, Tana River, and Kilifi. Also in the ‘do not travel’ list is Turkana County due to banditry.

“Terrorist attacks have occurred with little or no warning, targeting Kenyan and foreign government facilities, tourist locations, transportation hubs, hotels, resorts, markets/shopping malls, and places of worship. Terrorist acts have included armed assaults, suicide operations, bomb/grenade attacks, and kidnappings,” the alert states.

The Department has placed Eastleigh and Kibera areas in the ‘reconsider travel’ list over crime and kidnappings.

“Violent crime, such as armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion, and kidnapping, can occur at any time. Street crime can involve multiple armed assailants. Local police often lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents.”

“Consider carefully whether to use the Likoni ferry in Mombasa due to safety concerns,” the advisory adds.

  1. Kenyans and Africans this…
Kenyans and Africans this warning, just like the lockdown should be a blessing in disguise for us. It’s time for the black nation to stop dependency on tourism from outsiders and embrace tourism from fellow Africans. Time to grow our economies from within. A time to ask ourselves, who are we when foreigners are not there; who are we when we are not being helped or patronized; who are we when foreigners are not giving us education? Who are we when we are importing nothing? Time to stand up and take care of ourselves and each other. Let us take this warning as a blessing!!

  2. Yes, Well deserved travel…
Yes, Well deserved travel advisory; US is the COVID-19 Central in the world. So, yes you need to tell your Americans not to come to Kenya. We do not need more cases from you more than what we already have.

  3. This is a big joke, Europe…
This is a big joke, Europe does not what Americans travelling to their countries so why should we. America needs to put its house in order before they can talk about travel, they are not welcome anywhere.

  4. I do not believe it is right…
I do not believe it is right to “BLAME AMERICA” they have always supported Kenya and also helped cub terrorism. We need to stop blaming the west and start putting our country together. Corruption and tribalism has tryly destroyed Kenya. Us borrowing an allowing Chinese in our country was the biggest mistake ever made.
