Nairobi Businessman Robbed of $150,000 in Fake Deal for Exchange of Old Sh1,000 Notes

Detectives have opened investigations into an incident where a Nairobi-based businessman was robbed of $150,000 (Sh15 million) last weekend.

The businessman, who operates a forex bureau in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, was reportedly approached by a broker who claimed to have a client who was seeking to exchange old Sh1,000 Kenyan notes ahead of September 30th deadline, according to The Standard.

The broker, who is well known to him, claimed that a politician wanted Sh15 million in the old Sh1,000 bill changed to American dollars at “a good rate”.

Without hesitating, the businessman packed crisp dollar notes totaling to 150,000 United States dollars and boarded the broker’s car. The two were going to meet the politician in order to finalize the transaction.

However, the broker turned on the businessman after they reached Upper Hill area before making away with his $150,000.

Nairobi Police Commander Philip Ndolo confirmed that officers are investigating the Saturday night incident that was reported at Capitol Hill Police Station.
