Appellate Court Judge Prof. Otieno Odek has passed away aged 56.
Prof. Odek reportedly collapsed and died at his residence in Kisumu on Monday morning, according to his family. The cause of his death is yet to be established.
Justice Odek became a judge of the Appeals Court in 2012 and served as the Director of the Judiciary Training Institute between 2016 and 2018. He unsuccessfully applied for the position of Supreme Court judge in 2011.
Before joining the Judiciary, Odek served as a senior lecturer and Dean in the Faculty of Law at the University of Nairobi as well as Managing Director of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute from December 2004 to 2012.
In a statement on Monday, Chief Justice David Maraga mourned Prof. Odek as a distinguished Judge and prolific legal scholar.
“He was not only a distinguished Judge but also a prolific legal scholar who was widely published and celebrated across the continent and beyond.”
“On behalf of the Judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire legal fraternity for this shocking loss,” said Maraga.
