Kenyan MPs Push for Gov't Cars, Rent-Free Houses in New Bill

Members of Parliament are pushing for increased benefits and privileges to enable them “discharge their duties effectively.”

In a new bill dubbed the Parliamentary Service Bill 2018 and to be debated on Tuesday, MPs propose what they describe as better terms of service, Daily Nation reports.

Part of the bill is based on recommendations made by National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in a report submitted last week.

The Bill proposes that all the 416 MPs and Speakers of both Senate and National Assembly be entitled to a government vehicle and a rent-free house.

MPs will also enjoy travel allowances, expanded medical insurance as well as increased constituency outreach operation if the Bill is approved.

Apart from the Sh20 million mortgage facility that each parliamentarian gets, the Bill further proposes that each MP be entitled to an official residence or house allowance as stipulated in the Employment Act.

The legislators are also pushing for government vehicles and car loans in addition to the mileage allowance and Sh7 million car grant they get.

They also want an enhanced medical insurance that will cover their extended families as well as travel allowances that will be decided based on the foreign country one is visiting.

“To enable the members discharge their responsibilities effectively and efficient functioning of parliament, these services and facilities shall be provided in such a manner and such rates as the commission may determine from time to time taking into account the rate applicable for other state officers,” the report reads in part.

  1. Total MADNESS!!!!when the…
Total MADNESS!!!!when the country is almost going belly up they come up with more nonsense. For goodness sake that’s why you get a salary. Like every other Kenyan use you salary to cater for your rent and other expenses, furthermore they get 20 million for a mortgage so how can they demand for free housing? Someone please ship these merciless lot to the moon…..

    • The ‘Giant’ US has a Total…
The ‘Giant’ US has a Total of 435 House Reps (aka MPs); and The ‘Midget’ Kenya has 349 MPs (aka House Reps). So STUPID of Kenya (for lack of a better Rebuke).

  2. Hawa ndugu zetu walafi wana…
Hawa ndugu zetu walafi wana uraibu (addictions) mwingi sana. Hebu niambieni, wamefanya nini tangu wachaguliwe?

  3. This is as a result of us…
This is as a result of us adopting a useless Katiba that is not guided by who we are. These are idle MPIG’s who have no idea, how to run a country. All they think is how to expand their plundering, corruption and misuse of the resources that belong to all Kenyans. As for travel allowances that are to be based ” on the country” they are travelling to, the question is: Did we elect them to travel or to solve the problems at home. Why don’t they then go and become representatives in those countries that they are travelling to. If these Mpigs are not content with what they currently get, why not resign and go where they can earn more. I am sure the Act does not allow for both Mortgage allowance and Monthly house allowance. No wonder others call us “Shit hole countries”. All we can debate is how to plunder more of our country’s resources. God give
Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!!

    • Veteran MPs are…
Veteran MPs are Strategically notorious of Ambukizaring newby MPs with UKOROFI and Tamaa. And it works (for them Selfish ones).

  4. @imara this is democracy…
@imara this is democracy ambayo tuliletewa na wazungu. Considering that 90% of them do not contribute anything in that house other than to vote Yes or No, isn’t it time Kenya did away with this system of government?

  5. This news just ruined my day…
This news just ruined my day.I have never seen such greedy selfish, and shameless lot.The bill should not pass, until all the slum dwellers have better housing.
If the common mwananchi has to find his or her way to” effectively execute his or her dities”,on salary,so should these mpigs.
Free cars and free housing on the backs of hard working wananchi…what an insult. They should all be voted out in the next elections. With all these improved and better communication technology the bulk of their work could be done without travelling much less abig house.

  6. Why not ELIMINATE all these…
Why not ELIMINATE all these idiots? We need our Kenya minus this crop of mis-leading thugs. All of them must go to s tart a new Kenya.

    • They should request for…
They should request for mlolongo for people to go and stone all these thieves aka Mpigs. In our culture we stone the thieves to death. Instead of bringing the voter’s card bring the stones.

  7. Ndugu @Njai: Nakuunga mkono…

“With all these improved and better communication technology the bulk of their work could be done without travelling much less a big house.”

Sayansi, teknolojia, ufundi, na uongozi bora ndiyo dawa ya kuikomboa nchi yetu na kuifanya iendelee bora milele na milele.

  8. I am suggesting that,we…
I am suggesting that,we should have our parliament filled with people who dont get paid.I certainly believe that,in a population of 48 million people, we could surely find 1000 who can effectively offer their services and expertise to the country without a salary.
Hey look at the pope, he does not get paid.
See, the notion of not having fat salaries, and numerous mistresses would discourage these greedy fellows from vying any position in parliament. And thus only those truly patriotic and selfless would run for parliament.Time to change. Just because mzungu pays his politicians, does not mean that we have to. We can create our own way of government. What we have now is creating to many self centered crooks.

  9. malayas mashetani madevils…
malayas mashetani madevils let them try wr ready for revolution?N yet they call kenya a christian nation?Christians who love free money abusing the poor population? But young pple who r the majority should come out n start revolution to send this thuggish leaders out?

  10. In the name of the poor…
In the name of the poor majority of Kenyans, the slum dwellers, the jobless masses of school leavers, college and university graduates, let us all head to the Parliament buildings, stomp in and demand that they cease and desist from plundering our tax money, our blood and sweat, our dignity and self-respect! I say revolution now! And also I ask: where are the so called NGOs to fight for the poor? Where is the law society of Kenya to sue for the rights of regular Mwananchi? Here are the facts: Nigeria aside, Kenya’s MP’s are the highest paid legislative body all over the world. They are paid, per county’s GDP, more than their counterparts in USA, Britain, Japan etc,. (Ref: IMF and IPSA) also see Business daily- July 2013. What these enemies of Kenyans are doing is extortion and corruption of the highest order. Our children are hungry, no medicine in health centers, no money for school and thousands of our beloved children and women go to bed daily on an empty stomach. True to J.M Kariuki’s saying: we’ve built for ourselves a nation of one million millionaires and ten million beggars. Brethrens, we’re shipwrecked and the ship is sinking fast-we must do something or else, we all perish. Arise!!
