Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was stranded for several hours after being robbed at an airport in Italy over the weekend.
Kingi had just landed at the airport from Brussels, Belgium where he had attended a meeting organized by United Nations Habitat when he the incident happened.
“After attending a very successful meeting in Brussels, Belgium, organized by the UN-Habitat to upscale the upgrading of informal settlements in Mtwapa, I headed for Italy for other meetings,” Kingi says in a statement on Facebook. “Unfortunately, upon arrival at the airport in Italy on 17th November, 2018, my briefcase containing my passport and other important documents was stolen,” the statament adds.
A CCTV footage obtained by police officers at the airport shows a suspect walking away with Kingi’s briefcase.
The Kenyan Embassy in Rome has since issued Kingi with an emergency passport to facilitate his travel back to Kenya.
“I immediately reported the matter to the airport Police and the Kenyan Embassy in Rome. The airport police reviewed the CCTV footage and indeed confirmed that someone had taken the briefcase and disappeared with it,” Kingi added.
Kingi thanked the Kenyan embassy in Rome for coming to his aid expeditiously, saying “I’m glad that our embassy in Rome called me today mid morning to confirm that my emergency travel documents that will facilitate my travel back home have already been processed and are now ready. There is, therefore, no cause for alarm as everything is now fine.”
