The government is set to disband Administration Police (AP) unit in a major restructuring in the National Police Service (NPS)
Plans are in top gear to have more than 60,000 officers serving under the unit absorbed into the regular police unit. 10,000 officers serving under the outfit will however be retained to guard border control points and government buildings, reports People Daily.
The proposed changes are aimed at having a cost-effective force and will also see the more than 100 positions of Assistant Inspector Generals (AIGs) slashed to 50.
Already, Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti has suspended the recruitment of APs into the directorate of criminal investigations and ordered officers posted in the outfit to return to their mother unit.
New directorates will be constituted under the Inspector General of Police to supervise the regular police, DCI and the General Service Unit (GSU). Under the new changes, the highly trained Recce squad will also lose its independence.
“The changes are aimed at doing away with duplication of duties by establishing one command with several directorates to assist the Inspector General,” a senior police officer told the paper.
