Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has said that he does not intend to defend his seat in 2022 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with Standard, the flamboyant Governor said he wants to leave a legacy in his first term in office and won’t fight to retain the seat. He further noted that he has never sought for reelection in his political career.
“I want to leave a legacy because I will not be running for a second term. I have never run for the same office twice in my political life, so why should this be the first time? I will deliver and leave an efficient office for Nairobians then move on to the next assignment for Kenyans,” Sonko noted.
Sonko served as Member of Parliament for Makadara after winning a by-election in 2010 and was later elected first Nairobi senator in 2013 general elections.
Asked on his next political move and on whether he would run for Presidency, Sonko said: “Don’t get ahead of yourself! I could even vie for a county assembly seat (MCA). I mean, that is one seat I have never contested for!
But for now, my focus is on working round-the-clock to ensure that we get Nairobi running like the world class city it ought to be.”
On being rated as one of the least performing governors in their first 100 days in office by a recently released poll, Sonko noted: “You cannot rate a cosmopolitan county like Nairobi with a provincial county within 100 days. We don’t even receive the same sharable revenue within those days.”
He added: “There are so much we have achieved since taking office, including increasing and streamlining revenue collection, curbing corruption and now we are closing in on the city cartels that I inherited from my predecessor who have messed this city.”
NAIROBI is a City GREATER…
NAIROBI is a City GREATER than Life, a no joke.
In today’s Kenya everything…
In today’s Kenya everything has to entwined with politics. Sonko might not be book smart but he is and he has delivered according to his God given ability. All this rating nonsense should not stop him from doing what he does best which is to help. Kidero was book smart but the biggest thief ever and he has ruined a lot of peoples life. I wont be surprised to see Sonko being the next Vice president and then being the president. At-least hes not corrupt and he never get paid or lather he get paid but he uses his salary to help people. Was Joho and Waititu on the list of under performing Gov ama kila saa ni Sonko.
@Omera,you sound gullible…
@Omera,you sound gullible right now. Can Sonko account for his wealth and how he is able to keep up with giving? His heart is in the right place but his way of helping creates people who are dependent on him and he truly thrives in that. Im not sure whether it is intentional and calculative or he is truly just doing his best bearing in mind he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. 100 days down the line he has not dealt with the simple stuff, garbage.
Sonko has ruined many young…
Sonko has ruined many young people’s lives by selling drugs.
Keep up the spirit governor…
Keep up the spirit governor and do something for Nairobians without getting into fist fights. Elections are over, time to clean up the city.
Sonko has sensed the dupe…
Sonko has sensed the dupe machine on his rear end. he will play his part of a ceremonial governor as scripted by his masters.
Sonko & Igathe-;strive to…
Sonko & Igathe-;strive to make Nairobi great again.
The menace from hawkers and street families, trenches soaking with garbage, broken KPLC posts line places like Westland and flower vendors and other traders dump on side of streets.
Keep water flowing and rid the city of Kinder mushrooming slums and kiosks at every corner. With devolution, other counties should attract more people and ease the cohesion in Nairobi.
-Enhance security and create an environment for businesses to thrive. You have too many city as karts doing redundant work like managing traffic and parking.
Avoid giving contracts to jokers who do the bare minimum for millions of shillings.Eg. recent work on Lower Kabete Rd in Spring Valley done in minutes now worse than before the poor mix of pebbles were dumped into the pot holes.
Please find strategies to make life comfortable for Nairobi tax payers so we can guarantee the county sustainable revenue.
-Put systems in place to support the poor, those with disabilities in the city.
– Job creation to absorb the youth
Could write chapters but let’s see how much of the above you can do to make Nairobi residents proud.
God bless your good work.
Yours In anticipation.
Sonko should be a state…
Sonko should be a state guest at Shimo La Tewa for drug trade had it not being the rule of corruption in Kenya. But he is above the law.Wanjinga Kenyans should stop the habit of cerebrating and worshiping these devils but demand action and justice against them.
Haha he has finally realised…
Haha he has finally realised that he was being used all along. The people of Nairobi are not to be played around with but then again when you think you are the mayor of the county that brings in the largest share in terms of money know that there are people out there who will protect their ill gotten wealth. You should resign as a matter of principle instead of just being a figure head.Sometimes popularity does not mean ability.Your beloved hawkers are over running the city and surely if you cannot deal with this lot how do you expect to clamp down on the matatu cartels.Nairobians have given you enough time and it is time that your boss appointed a capable person to do the job .Imagine a country like Rwanda being cleaner than Nairobi yet we pride ourselves on being the most developed country in east africa..Retire and go farm in Ukambani.
Sonko has tried his best as…
Sonko has tried his best as an mpig, senator n we hope he delivers in our capital city.Yes his wealth is very questionable but if u compare what he does with his money comapared to other idiots like raila, kidero,Mount Kenya mafia who have stollen n don’t help nobody then Sonko to me remains the best man.Nairobi is becoming cleaner day by day n I have no doubt Sonko igathe will deliver coz they r young, reasonable, hardworking n they feel the kawaida mwanaichi daily problems.Sonko wewe fanya kazi Coz who knows if we will b alive 2022?Who knows where kenya,USA,n other countries will b in 2022.Lots of positive or negatives can happen but let’s keep hope alive this year.Ngai Wa kirinyaga a bless Kenya.
Compete hard, win and move…
Compete hard, win and move one-sound philosophy gov., for life is short and a lot of rich living to live. So do all the good you can do here and now then move on to other avenues.
