Her stay in the USA takes her from New Jersey to Washington State, to Massachusetts, with the hope of legalizing her stay. This is not an easy journey, as the main character comes to find out. Meanwhile, Ann had left her husband, Mwai Tanu, and two daughters, back in Kenya. This is an emotive issue faced by numerous immigrants who leave their loved ones back home with the hope of bettering the fortunes of the family. Many succeed, but at what cost? Others fail to reach the always elusive dream.

Besides Ann’s tribulations, we meet other Kenyan immigrants in the USA and get a glimpse of how life unfolds for them in their adopted country. The story of Ann could be the story of millions of immigrants all over the world and the emotional and psychological effects that immigration brings to the lives of the immigrants.
