General Samson Mwathethe will continue to serve as the Chief of Defence Forces following the extension of his term by one more year.
His stay has been extended by President Kenyatta after his term expired last month.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defense says the extension of Mwathethe’s term took effect on May 6th, 2019.
Mwathethe replaced retired Chief of Defense Forces General Julius Karangi in April 2015 for a single four-year term as stipulated in the Kenya Defense Forces Act 2012.
The law gives the President the powers to extend the term of office of military heads for a period not exceeding 12 months.
President Kenyatta has also promoted Adan Kancharo to lieutenant general while Joseph Kivunzi, Jonah Mwangi, Albert Kiprop, George Ng’ang’a, Mohamed Badi, Said Farah, and Martin Ong’oyi have been promoted to Major General. Several colonels have also promoted to brigadier.
Uhuru has further appointed George Owino as the deputy force commander of Amisom, Ngewa Mukala as the managing director of Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation and Rashid Elmi as the director of International Peace Support Training Centre.
