Monica Nyaguthie Kibunjah was born on October 1st 1956 to James Kibunja Kimani and Esther Wakonyo Chege in Gikuni, Kiambu County, Kenya. She was the 6th born of 12 children. When she was about 3 years old, her parents moved the family to Nairobi after finding employment at Mathare Hospital where Monica and her siblings grew up. At 7 years old Monica was enrolled at Karura Primary School, and continued schooling there until completing her primary education in 1969. After excelling in primary school, Monica was selected to attend Pangani Girls High School where she completed her high school education in 1973.
Upon completing High School, she attended Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to study Secretarial. Her first job was with Bata Shoe Company where she worked for 35 years.
Monica met her husband Peter Kungu Kagia in Nairobi where they got married and went on to have a beautiful family. They are blessed with 4 beautiful children; James Kibunja Kungu, Margaret Nyambura (Kungu) Korir, Esther Wakonyo Kungu and Ruth Waithera Kungu. They are also blessed with 6 grandchildren; Dylan Kungu Kibunja (7), Kyla Kungu Kibunja (5), Jaylan Kungu Kibunja (1 ½), Chepkemboi Korir (4), Taji Kibet Korir (5 months), Imani Njoki Mwangi (3)
In 2011, Monica immigrated to the US where she began working first as a child caregiver and later as a home health aide. It is when she was caring for little babies or when she was caring for the elderly that Monica’s loving, kind and wonderful spirit came alive until that day the Lord called her home on June 21st, 2021.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents and 9 siblings. She leaves behind 2 sisters; Mary Ndegwa and Edah Njeri Ochwada, her brother Phillip Njau Kibunja, her 4 children, 6 grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews who all love her very much.
Monica will always live in our hearts and be remembered as the ‘darling’ that she was. May the good Lord rest her beautiful soul in peace.
