COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has proposed the potential elimination of presidential term limit to mitigate persistent political campaigning.

Atwoli argues that the current constitutional restriction perpetuates a cycle of continuous political maneuvering with potential presidential candidates strategically positioning themselves almost immediately after each electoral cycle. Articulating his perspective, Atwoli contends that term limits are fundamentally problematic, creating an environment where political aspirants are perpetually focused on future electoral opportunities rather than substantive national development. He lauds countries without term restrictions as experiencing greater political stability and leadership continuity.

Specifically referencing Uganda, Atwoli questions whether such nations encounter the same political disruptions prevalent in Kenya. The trade unionist further expands his critique by pointing out the apparent double standard in international governance perspectives. He observes that European monarchies, which operate under different constitutional frameworks, do not subject themselves to the same frequent electoral transitions demanded of African nations.

Coinciding with his recent calls for a comprehensive constitutional review, Atwoli emphasizes the challenges facing President William Ruto. He argues that the current constitutional framework enables legal interventions that can effectively paralyze national development projects, even when these initiatives are demonstrably beneficial to the broader public interest. economic advancement.
