President William Ruto has signalled his intent to strengthen his political alliance with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The move could have major implications for the country’s political landscape. During two rallies in Kisumu on November 26, 2024, Ruto demonstrated a newfound political solidarity, praising Odinga and seeking support from the Nyanza region while simultaneously addressing internal political challenges. In his speech, the President offered support for Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship while subtly critiquing his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua. Ruto emphasized national unity, directly challenging divisive political rhetoric and tribal-based politics.
He declared a firm stance against those who seek to perpetuate societal divisions, stating unequivocally that his government has no tolerance for tribalism or hatred. Economically, Ruto outlined substantial development commitments for the region. He announced significant financial allocations, including Sh800 million for fisheries development in Lake Victoria counties and plans to construct 2,400 affordable housing units in Kisumu, with an eventual target of 10,000 units. Additionally, he committed Sh1 billion to establish a fisheries and research centre in Kabonyo Kanyagwal.
Healthcare emerged as another key focus, with Ruto promising a universal healthcare scheme designed to provide comprehensive medical access for all Kenyan citizens, including those with limited financial resources. Political support for Ruto was evident, with ODM party chairperson Gladys Wanga and Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi publicly endorsing his leadership. The President’s participation in the Fourth African Sub-Sovereign Governments Network Conference further highlighted his broader governmental objectives, including youth employment initiatives.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi reinforced the administration’s dedication to devolution, confirming no outstanding county arrears and pledging comprehensive support for local governments. Ruto himself emphasized legislative priorities, insisting that Parliament must pass the Division of Revenue Act and County Allocation of Revenue Act before adjourning. President William Ruto received a jubilant welcome in Kisumu County, marking a shift from past political tensions. Accompanied by Governor Anyang Nyong’o, Ruto was greeted by traditional dancers and an enthusiastic crowd. The President highlighted the difference from his previous campaign visit in 2021 when his motorcade was stoned.
