Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has voiced concerns regarding the potential repercussions for President William Ruto should Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship prove unsuccessful.
During a televised interview on Citizen TV, Maanzo cautioned against premature optimism, suggesting that the government’s substantial investment of state resources in Odinga’s campaign could backfire. The senator’s remarks come in the wake of President Ruto’s high-profile tour of the Nyanza region, which commenced shortly after the official launch of Odinga’s candidacy at State House. Maanzo questions the timing of this tour, arguing that it might raise unrealistic expectations among the region’s residents.
He posits that the visit could potentially complicate matters for the President if Odinga’s bid falls short. Ruto’s four-day tour of Nyanza includes inspections of key development projects and road inaugurations. Accompanied by regional leaders and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the visit is widely interpreted as an effort to consolidate political support in an area traditionally aligned with Odinga. Odinga’s pursuit of the AUC chairmanship has garnered significant backing from various African leaders, including the presidents of Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan, as well as support from the governments of Burundi, Rwanda, and Nigeria.
This widespread endorsement is crucial as Odinga seeks to succeed the outgoing AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki of Chad, whose term concludes early next year. During the launch of his candidacy, Odinga articulated his vision for transforming the African Union into a more people-centred organization. He pledged to work collaboratively with all African heads of state to address recurring challenges such as conflicts, economic instability, and governance issues. Odinga emphasized his commitment to fostering unity and inclusivity across the continent, promising a leadership style that would bring together all regions of Africa in pursuit of common objectives.
President Ruto, for his part, has expressed unwavering confidence in Odinga’s capabilities, praising his extensive experience in both Kenyan and African politics. The President asserted that Odinga possesses the capacity to not only meet but exceed the expectations of the role.
