Rebecca Miano’s nomination as Attorney-General by President William Ruto marks a return to the administration for the former Cabinet Secretary.

This appointment comes in the wake of her dismissal from her role as Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade & Industry on July 11, 2024, a position she had held since October 2023. Miano’s experience includes her previous role as Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development. The Attorney-General’s office plays a crucial role in Kenya’s legal and political landscape.

This office is responsible for formulating legal policies, ensuring proper administration of the legal system, overseeing professional legal education, and advising the government on legal matters. The Attorney-General is supported by a team of key officials including the Solicitor General, Senior Deputy Solicitor General, and Director of Public Prosecutions, among others. Kenya has a rich history of distinguished Attorney-Generals since its independence, with notable figures such as Charles Mugane Njonjo, Amos Wako, and Githu Muigai having served in this capacity.

Each of these individuals has contributed significantly to shaping Kenya’s legal framework. Before independence, the role was held by various British appointees. Miano made history as the first female Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) where she served for five years. Her leadership in the energy sector has earned her recognition as a distinguished business leader.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Miano has been a champion for gender equality founding the Pink Energy forum to promote women’s participation in the energy sector. Miano’s nomination comes amidst a period of political challenges in Kenya as the country has been experiencing anti-government protests.
