European Union Denies It Declared Kenya's Elections Free and Fair

The European Union has dismissed claims that it declared Kenya’s August 8th general elections free and fair.

EU Chief Observer to Kenya Marietje Schaake said that her delegation did not rubber stamp the elections.

Shaake said that the European Union only issued a preliminary statement that was pointed towards election day which she said was calm and voting went on smoothly.

Shaake defended her team saying that in their statements on the August 8th polls, they pointed out rushed timelines, unprepared timelines, use of technology, the abuse of state resources among other irregularities.

The Europe Union insisted that their election monitors in Kenya are Independent and impartial and have no preferred candidates, but their only concern and care is towards the rights of every Kenyan.

Speaking to NTV, the chief observer further noted that EU in their report also raised questions on timely uploading of result forms and condemned the delisting of NGOs saying that they underlined the critical roles of the civil society in the electoral processes.

The EU Chief observer said that she was disappointed that only one sentence picked from their preliminary statement, when they had issued several statements regarding last month’s election that has since been nullified by the Supreme Court.

The European Union observers will still monitor the October 17th repeat election and will continue to do their work Independently and impartially, Shaake Said.
