Safaricom has found itself at the center of controversy amid recent anti-tax demonstrations and youth-led protests.

Social media platforms have been rife with allegations that the company shared customers’ personal information, leading to arrests and alleged abductions. However, Safaricom has firmly denied these claims, reaffirming its commitment to customer privacy and compliance with data protection laws. The controversy erupted when Kenyans took to social media to voice their concerns about the alleged sharing of personal data by Safaricom.

Claims have circulated that customer information, including names, telephone numbers, locations, and even details of family members, have been disclosed to security agencies without consent. These allegations have sparked widespread privacy concerns among the public. In response to the mounting accusations, Safaricom has issued a press statement , vehemently denying any wrongdoing. The company asserts that it had not shared any customer data with government agencies unless explicitly required by a court order.

Safaricom emphasizes its respect for customers’ privacy rights and reiterates its commitment to upholding data protection laws in Kenya. The company’s stance aligns with legal requirements in Kenya which mandate that companies safeguard customer data and disclose it only when legally compelled. Safaricom maintains that without a court order, it would not release any individual’s personal information. The office of the Data Protection Commissioner has also intervened in the matter, issuing a warning against sharing personal data without proper authorization.

Despite these assurances, public anxiety persists with many citizens remain concerned about the safety of their private information and the potential misuse of data by security agencies. Some argue that any sharing of personal data should be conducted transparently, with explicit consent from the affected individuals.
