The Nairobi County government has temporarily closed Uhuru Park Grounds “until further notice.”
Its closure comes only a week before the swearing-in of National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga, raising suspicion on whether it is a plot to block the outfit from holding the event at the venue.
The opposition had announced it will hold the inauguration of Odinga as the people’s president on January 30th at Uhuru Park, although there are reports it has shifted the fete to an alternative venue.
In a public notice, City Hall announced the historical ground will remain closed from Wednesday until further notice to allow for “phased improvement”.
“Notice is hereby given to the General Public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors. We apologise for any inconveniences caused,” read the notice issued by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.
During the closure, the facility will remain out of bounds to the public for any gatherings or meetings.
“Consequently, the facility has been closed down to the public for any gatherings and meetings with effect from January 23, 2018 until further notice.”
A church and the controversial Nairobi Business Community had reportedly been granted permission by City Hall to hold separate events at the park on January 30th, the same date the NASA event is set to take place.
