On Saturday night, two military officers assigned to protect National Security Advisor Monica Juma were forced to shoot at a lone gunman who attacked them on the Mwingi-Garissa highway near Nguni market.
Without Monica Juma present, two bodyguards driving from Nairobi to Juma’s hometown of Mwingi East were ambushed by an unexpected foreign armed assailant. The incident took place on an isolated stretch of road, and a report lodged at the Nguni police station records that the gunman had successfully ordered the bodyguards out of their vehicle before committing a violent robbery. Fortunately, Dr. Juma, a former Defence Cabinet Secretary under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, was not present during the incident
As they combed through the area, law enforcement officers came across a variety of items inside the perpetrator’s bag. The contents encompassed an array of different items including Somali currency, a solar panel, a small bag filled with 38 rounds and an AK-47 used in the attack. His primary weapon was outfitted with 23 bullets. Kitui detectives are currently engaged in determining the identity of the assailant and unravelling the mystery of how he managed to instil fear among motorists, all while concealing himself within the depths of the bush.
Moments earlier, the assailant had launched an attack on a water tanker belonging to St. Andrew’s Academy in Mwingi, riddling the vehicle with gunfire. The truck’s driver, Patrick Mutie, shared his account of the incident with the police. He explained that he had noticed an armed individual signalling for him to stop but chose to accelerate away instead. Suddenly, he heard the piercing sound of three gunshots and soon discovered that one of his right front tires had been hit. Undeterred by this setback, he determined to continue with the deflated tire until he reached Nguni market.
The lifeless body of the assailant has been moved to the mortuary at Mwingi Level Four Hospital as investigations continue.
