At least 32 Jubilee Party MPs have broken ranks with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition and pledged to work with President Ruto.
Led by nominated MP Sabina Chege and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega, the leaders committed to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration following a meeting with President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday.
“We don’t want to feel left out in your government so we kindly request you to include us in your development plans,” Chege said.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan, who was part of the Jubilee delegation, said they decided to join hands to bolster the agenda of Ruto’s administration.
“We want to be part of this government having been together before the last elections,” Keynan stated.
Speaking during the meeting, President Ruto said it was inevitable for leaders to work together, saying they were all elected by the same people.
“You have a right to make choices as Kenya is a democratic country. You are now our members and we will treat you as such. We will be seeking your support on Bills and regulations on the Housing Fund, Water Purchasing Agreements, among others,” Ruto said.
The Jubilee Party, which is headed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is an affiliate party of the Azimio coalition.
The development comes a day after nine ODM MPs abandoned Azimio leader Raila Odinga and pledged allegiance to President Ruto. They claimed they abandoned Odinga for what they termed as his ‘endless politics’.
The ODM leaders included Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang’o (Lang’ata), Caroli Omondi (Suba-South), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Shakeel Shabir (Kisumu East), Paul Abuor (Rongo), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Walter Owino (Awendo), Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and Gideon Ochanda (Bondo).
