Gov't Warns Kenyans Against Using Unauthorized Home DNA Test Kits

The Ministry of Health has warned Kenyans against using the home DNA test kits that are being marketed on social media platforms, saying they are unauthorized.

The ministry, through the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), said it has not authorized the sale of such test kits and urged Kenyans to be on the lookout for retailers purporting to sell the kits.

“It has been brought to the attention of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) that unauthorized Home DNA Test Kits are being marketed on digital platforms for retail in the Kenyan market,” PPB CEO Dr. Fred Siyoi said in the statement.

“Please note that the PPB has not authorized any retailer to sell such Kits and hereby appeal to the public to be on the lookout for retailers marketing these Kits.”

Dr. Siyoi urged Kenyans to visit the PPB website for access to authorized products.

“Consumers are encouraged to report to the PPB in case they come across any retailer selling related products,” he added.

The warning follows reports that Kenyans can now collect their DNA swab for home testing, with the kit declared to be available at various pharmacies at a retail cost of about Sh800.
