Co-operative and SMEs Cabinet Secretary nominee Simon Chelugui has put his net worth at Sh993 million, accrued from investment in a dairy plant, rental properties and agriculture.
Chelugui, 51, revealed his net worth when he appeared before the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments for vetting on Saturday morning.
“I have a dairy plant, I have houses such as the residence that I live in now and rental houses in Nairobi. I am also a farmer; I keep cows for dairy and beef,” he said.
Chelugui is the only member of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet who has been offered a Cabinet Secretary post by President Ruto. He was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Water and Sanitation by President Kenyatta in 2018 before he was transferred to the Labor and Social Welfare docket.
He previously served as a director at the National Government CDF Fund where he chaired the technical committee for four years before resigning in 2012 to run for the Baringo gubernatorial seat but he lost the election.
Chelugui was later appointed the director of the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) but resigned in 2018 to vie for the Baringo senate seat, albeit unsuccessfully.
If his nomination is approved, Chelugui will oversee the roll out of the Sh50 billion annual Hustlers Fund, a key component of President Ruto’s campaign that seeks to provide collateral free loans to SMEs at single-digit interest rates.
