Kalonzo Protests Gov’t Decision to Lift Ban on GMO Foods

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has questioned the government’s decision to lift a ban on Genetically Modified Crops (GMO).

The move to lift the 10-year ban on GMO foods was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Ruto on October 3rd following recommendations of the Task Force formed to Review Matters Relating to Genetically Modified Foods and Food Safety.

The decision paved the way for the open cultivation of genetically modified crops and the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology innovations.

Musyoka wants President Ruto to reconsider the move, arguing that even though GMO crops will reduce food shortage in the country, citizens will experience adverse health effects in the long run.

“When the President was Minister for Agriculture, he was vehemently opposed to GMOs as I am… I’m calling on William to reconsider (lifting of the ban) for the sake of this country,” Kalonzo told the media on Tuesday.

He added: “The long-term effects of GMO out weight the short-term gains if indeed there are any. Kenya lacks adequate capacity to test GMO traits and the impact it has on health.”

He further noted that the approval will cause issues when it comes to exporting agricultural produce to neighboring countries since most of them do not support the production of GMO foods.

“Even if our farmers adopt the BT-maize seed, this will not bring down the cost of maize since the price is artificially manipulated,” said Kalonzo.

“Our genetic generic seed company and small-scale farming risk dying out as a result of unfair competition from subsidized GMOs and corporate capture by the multinationals.”

Stating that the issue of food security should not be premised on maize consumption alone, Musyoka urged the church to speak against the introduction of GMO foods in Kenya.

“We are surprised by the silence of the Church which was once against GMOs. Could it be that they are pacified by the new administration… we urge our religious leaders not to sell their souls but to speak the truth to power,” he added.
