Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says 14 million out of the 22 million registered voters cast their votes in Tuesday’s general election, representing a 65.4 percent voter turnout.
Speaking during a media briefing on Wednesday, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the figure has been derived from the Kenya Integrated Management System (KIEMS) kits.
He indicated that the final voter turnout will be compiled once the number of voters who were identified using the manual register are reconciled.
““The voter turnout is based on the verification of the KIEMS kits which were functional during the process of voting,” Chebukati noted.
“We have areas where the commission allowed the use of manual register and we shall not be able to give you the exact voter turnout unto the data is transmitted in the results form and we compute the final voter turnout.”
On Tuesday, the electoral commission said it allowed the usual of manual voter register in 138 polling stations in Makueni and Kakamega counties due to the technical failure of the KIEMS kit.
They included 84 polling stations in Kibwezi Constituency and 54 polling stations in Malava, Matungu, Mumias East and Mumias West constituencies.
