The first batch of presidential ballots has arrived in the country ahead of the August 9th general elections.
An Egyptair flight carrying the consignment landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday morning and was received by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera.
Addressing reporters at the airport, Cherera said the commission invited a delegation of 13 people to Athens, Greece, where the ballot papers and other election materials are being printed.
She noted that the team was formed to assist in determining whether the ballot papers adhered to the specifications provided to Inform P Lykos, the Athens-based company awarded the contract to print election materials.
“We invited stakeholders to check with a third eye because they are the ones that now how the photos and the details of the presidential candidates are supposed to look like,” said Cherera.
The team included religious leaders, presidential candidates’ representatives, civil society representatives, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, the Political Parties Liaison Committee, and the Kenya Media Council.
IEBC indicated that Mombasa will receive 19 pallets of the ballot papers, Kwale 14, Kilifi 20, Tana River 8, Lamu 4, Taita Taveta 6, Garissa 10, Wajir 6, Marsabit 10, and Isiolo 5.
Meru will get 27, Tharaka-Nithi 9, Embu 14, Kitui 27, Machakos 18, Makueni 12, Nyandarua 8, and Nyeri 8. Each pallet contains approximately 54 boxes for one constituency.
The second batch of ballot papers is expected to arrive in the country on July 29th, with the final shipment arriving on August 3rd via commercial and private planes.
The ballots will be taken to IEBC’s warehouse for storage awaiting to be dispatched to different constituencies.
