Global soft drinks manufacturer Coca-Cola has admitted that one of their brands, Dasani water is contaminated with micro-plastics.
The giant firm’s admission comes a day after the release of a study showing that Dasani was one of the 93 per cent of world’s famous bottled water products, that contain tiny pieces of plastic.
Dasani water, which is sourced from Kenya, allegedly contain a concentration of 335 plastic pieces for every litre.
Samples of the brand purchased from Amazon was found to have a minimum and maximum concentration of 85 and 303 pieces of plastics per litre, respectively.
“We found roughly twice as many plastic particles within bottled water as compared to tap water on average,”the study said.
The survey, which was carried out by a New York-based scientists and commissioned by a non-profit media organisation Orb, sampled bottled water sourced from Kenya, Indonesia, India, US, Lebanon, Thailand, China, Mexico, Brazil and e-commerce platform Amazon.
Speaking during an interview with BBC, Coca-Cola said it had some of the most strict quality standards in the drinks industry and used a “multi-step filtration process.”
It, however, admitted that microplastics “appear to be ubiquitous and therefore may be found at minute levels even in highly treated products”.
