Tourism Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Joseph Boinnet has stepped down from his position to pursue a career in politics.
Boinnet, who served as the Inspector-General of Police between 2015 and 2019, said he will run for the Elgeyo Marakwet governor’s seat in the August 9th elections. He made the announcement following a meeting with members of the parliamentary Sports Committee on Thursday.
“Today’s appearance in parliament marks the end of my tour of duty as a Chief Administrative Secretary because immediately after this, I am going to tender my resignation,” Boinnet told reporters outside parliament buildings.
“I intend to head to the county where I was born to vie for the position of governor in the county of Elgeyo Marakwet.”
In a circular dated January 28th, the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua notified public officers eyeing elective seats in the forthcoming elections to resign and hand over their offices by February 8th.
The Elections Act requires public officers seeking to contest for political seats to step down at least six months before the General Elections.
Boinnet joined the police service in 1984, rising through the ranks to become a senior superintendent before he was moved to the National Intelligence Service (NIS). In 2015, he took over from former Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo, who resigned in December 2014.
He holds a degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the Washington International University.
