Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Mutebile Dies in Nairobi

Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, has passed away in Kenya.

Mutebile died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital, according to an announcement by the bank’s Deputy Governor Micheal Atingi-Ego.

The 72-year-old was admitted to the Nairobi Hospital on December 31st, 2021 for emergency treatment after collapsing due to diabetic-related complications. Mutebile, a seasoned economist, has been in and out of hospital in recent years.

The deceased served as Governor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Uganda from 2001 to date and secretary to the treasury from 1992 to 2001.

He is credited for overseeing the designing and implementation of the Economic Reform Program that restored Uganda from the economic crisis of the 1970s and 1980s.

Mutebile also served as a consultant for several multilateral and regional organizations among them the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). He also worked for the governments of Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, and Nepal.
