Five police officers have been arrested in Ruiru, Kiambu County over robbery with violence allegations.

The five are said to have arrested a man in Ruiru town on August 12th for flouting curfew rules and handcuffed him.

One of them took the man’s mobile phone, demanded his MPesa secret code, and transferred Sh1,030 to another subscriber. The complainant said the officer later transferred the money to another mobile phone before deleting the MPesa message.

“This was to prevent me from sending the same to 456 for reversal,” said the complainant.

Kiambu County Police Commander Ali Nuno said he saw the complaint on social media and opened an investigation into the case. Investigators visited Safaricom offices where they confirmed the allegations.

“We confirmed there was an element of robbery. They had handcuffed this man and while armed they took away his mobile phone and transferred his money to their numbers,” Nuno said.

They obtained a court order to scrutinize the officers’ mobile numbers as part of the probe.

Following the investigation, Nuno led other senior officers to Ruiru police station on Tuesday where the five officers who were on duty that day were arrested and arraigned in court. The court allowed police to detain them for 14 days pending completion of investigations.

The suspects are facing charges of robbery with violence contrary to sections 295 and 296 (2) of the Penal Code.

Also arrested is the owner and an employee of an MPesa shop that transacted the business.
