JSC Settles on Justice Martha Koome for Kenya Chief Justice Post

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has forwarded Justice Martha Koome’s name to President Kenyatta for appointment as Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.

JSC settled on Justice Koome to replace retired Chief Justice David Maraga following interviews that concluded last Friday.

Koome, a judge of the Appeals Court, was among the 10 candidates who were interviewed by JSC for the top position.

If appointed, she will become the first-ever female Chief Justice in the history of the country.

This was Koome’s second attempt at the CJ position, having tried unsuccessfully in 2016.

Koome, who currently heads the Criminal Division at the Court of Appeal, boasts 33 years in the legal profession.

She was admitted to the bar as an advocate of the High Court in 1986 and practiced law until 2003 when she was appointed as a High Court judge.

Between 2003 and 2011, Koome served in different capacities as head of Land and Environmental Division in Nairobi, Resident Judge in Nakuru and Kitale, and at the Commercial and Family Divisions in Nairobi. She was appointed as judge of the Appellate Court in 2012.

She holds a Master of Laws from the University of London (2010), Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi (1986), Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law (1987).

Let’s hope she sticks to policy and professionalism unlike the males who have before her who have been foolishly contaminated by politics. Let’s see what changes she implements in the judicial system in the first year of her term. She is the new chiefess in town.

@ Sokora, the males before her were corrupt, and contaminated by politics,as you put it not because of their “maleness”.They were not fit to be there to begin with.Add that to their questionable integrity, ability ,greed and you get unfit person to hold any office much less this one of CJ.
All we can hope for is that this- Lady-Justice- will resist the temptations that her male predecessors were quick to embrace, and take advantage of.I wish her the very best, and we should all support her.I am confident that Uhuru will also have a stamp on approval

#3 CJs in 10 years, that’s a waste of public funds. All retire with a yearly pack enough to feed 1000 poor people. Some retirement BS need to be revisited.

Comparable to all holders of official governmental posts, Supreme Court Justices are not insulated from “siasa”. The latter is part and parcel of these positions.

It stand to reason that no matter how gifted a person may be, she or he may not properly perform their duties under duress.

What is an ultimate form of duress? Threat of bodily harm or death for a person or his or her family. Unless one is insulated against this form of duress, one is not free of politics in any government post.
