Security Lapse: Man Drives into State House After Following Uhuru's Motorcade

President Kenyatta’s security has been enhanced following an incident where a Ruiru-based businessman drove into State House last week.

The Star reports that the incident happened last Tuesday after Kenyatta attended the burial of the late Juja MP Francis Waititu, alias Wakapee.

The businessman is said to have joined the president’s motorcade soon after the conclusion of Waititu’s burial and followed it all the way to State House through Thika Road, Wangari Maathai Road, Uhuru Highway, Nyerere Road, and Processional Way.

Security officers noticed his presence after his driver broke protocol and drove past the president’s car while he was alighting at State House main entrance.

The businessman and his driver were arrested and debriefed before being handed over to Kilimani OCPD Vitalis Otieno. They were later released unconditionally after the Office of the President was briefed about the incident.

“They apologized and were remorseful after learning they had breached the protocol,” an officer privy to the matter told The Star.

State House and police headquarters declined to comment about the security scare when contacted by The Star.

There are three circles in a presidential escort detail, including the inner, center, and outer. The inner circle is supposed to know who is in the president’s car and which vehicles are close to his.

“They are core and can do anything to protect the president’s car. No car is allowed there and they are always in communication,” the official was quoted as saying.

On the other hand, the center circle is tasked with knowing which cars are close to, behind, or ahead of the inner while the outer circle clears the way for the motorcade.

The businessman is reported to have told police officers that his vehicle was a few meters from the president’s by the time they reached Githurai area.

At one point, the escort team spotted the car and tried to block it but they were distracted by crowds of people who wanted to view the motorcade.
