33 church members among them a pastor were on Tuesday arrested in Ngurubani, Kirinyaga County for defying the government’s ban on social gatherings.
Police officers found the 33 people worshiping inside a house belonging to one of the congregants on Tuesday morning.
Confirming the incident, Mwea-East Police Commander John Onditi said church members, who were all squeezed in the house, resisted arrest and demanded that police quote a bible verse that forbids worshippers from gathering.
“These people were in someone’s house, obviously in very squeezed space, this is very wrong and goes against the rules of social distancing,” Onditi said.
Out of the 33 members of the congregation, nine were children while 25 were adults. The kids were released to go home whereas the adults were booked to Wang’uru Police Station.
It is not clear whether the defiant worshippers will be placed under forced quarantine like in similar cases across the country.
The Health Ministry last month banned all social gatherings including church services as part of the measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.
