Officials from People Living with Disability (PWD) network on Wednesday rescued a 46-year-old Kenyan man who had been locked in a house for four years after he got paralyzed.
Walter Ojowi was rescued from a house in Kotuga in Suna West Sub-County, Migori County, where his family had isolated him since 2016.
Speaking after he was rescued, Ojowi said he remained bedridden and has never left the room since he became paralyzed four years ago. He added that the room’s door was always locked and would only be opened when his family served him food.
An emotional Ojowi further disclosed that his wife ditched him after he became disabled.
Addressing the media after the operation, Migori County PWD Chairperson Albert Matara termed the incident as unfortunate as he called on Kenyans not to isolate people living with a disability.
Matara and his team gifted Ojowi with a mobility device to help him move around.
