London Hospital Demands Sh2 Million from Late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso’s Family

A London-based hospital where the late Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso was treated for cancer in June this year is demanding Sh2 million from her family.

Speaking during an interview with The Star, Laboso’s widower, Edwin Abonyo said he recently received a call from the UK hospital demanding Sh2 million it claimed was an unsettled medical bill.

Abonyo said they were shocked because they had cleared the hospital bill before the demise of his wife.

“Together with my son, we cleared with the hospital, so we were surprised to have the bill,” Abonyo told The Star.

“I, however, told them that we actually lost the patient, and since then they went silent. So we don’t know whether they will pursue it or let it slide,” he added.

Laboso was admitted at Royal Madden NHS Hospital in London in early June before she was transferred to an Indian hospital about four weeks later.

She returned to the country in mid-July and succumbed to the disease while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital on July 29th. Abonyo admitted that his family is still struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“I have cried a lot in private. Whenever I step in our house, our room, in particular, the emotions come fresh. I remember everything and the memories kill me,” Abonyo said during the interview.

He thanked President Kenyatta and Laboso’s friends for standing with the family during the difficult period.

“[President] Uhuru is a good man. The State must be well appreciated. It afforded us much help. Joyce also had numerous friends who were loyal, genuine and true,” he said.

Uhuru recently appointed Abonyo as a member of the State Corporation Advisory Committee for a period of three years.

When asked if the appointment was a way Kenyatta saying “sorry” for Lasboso’s loss, Abonyo noted: “If it is so, I’m grateful. If not so, I’m even more grateful.”
