Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua this week launched a Sh50 million Cancer Care and Research Centre, where residents will get free treatment for cancer.
Speaking when he launched the facility on Thursday, Governor Mutua said the center will offer cancer screening, diagnosis, counseling, as well as chemotherapy treatment and management.
Mutua said Machakos residents who are registered under the Universal Health Coverage program will be treated at the facility for free while patients from Makueni and Kitui, which are under the South Eastern Kenya Economic Block (SEKEB), will be offered services at special rates.
The new facility is premised at Machakos Level 5 Referral Hospital and aims at providing cancer treatment at affordable prices.
“We want to ensure that cancer treatment is for all of us, not just a few. Treatment for cancer must not be a preserve for the rich in society. Every resident of Machakos no matter how poor will be entitled to equivalent treatment as the rich who own bungalows and top of the range vehicles,” said Mutua.
Mutua said his administration will set aside Sh300 million in the next budget for the purchase of more equipment for the cancer facility.
“This center can undertake the highest quality of diagnosis and provide chemotherapy. Our strategy is to have several diagnostic and treatment centers spread all over the county within the next three years,” he said.
He added: “We will also utilize telemedicine for consultations between our doctors and experts in America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, and our African continent.”

I will take Mutua’s alleged publicity stunts any day than Uhuruto’s empty promises! Don’t care at all, it’s a step towards the right directions!
Structures will not do it…
Structures will not do it. We need policies that will work. Agricultural imports that are toxic, vehicle emissions we needs KEBS that’s not corrupt. All together Kenyans need an overhaul from this corrupt MPIGS

Policies will not do it. In paper, Kenya has among the best policies in the world. We need structures.

good start…but, any research oncologists or does the facility solely rely on telemedicine from “America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, and our African continent?” release the referral guidelines/capabilities would be nice to allay skepticism.
One step to the right…
One step to the right direction. HIV-associated cancers are very common in Kenya.
In support of Omosh, show of…
In support of Omosh, show of machines will not do anything. Translate the operation of those machines to local languages so they can help local population. Do not bring ” experts” we do not need them. Stop poisoning our population by replacing healthy locally produced farm products with poisonous imported ones; sugar with Mercury; plastic fish etc. Change your foreign favored policies and make policies beneficial to Kenyan citizens.
Machines are beautiful by themselves, not useful until we see them in operation and for how long?
What are the terms behind those machines? Will they need repair in a year or two and what will the cost of the repairs be? Do they have any warranty? Too many lies and traps in the past, we need to question. Trust but audit! Everything that glitters is not gold!!
Not a stunt, Dr. Mutua lived…
Not a stunt, Dr. Mutua lived in the USA and know a lot. He is doing an excellent job and we should not bring him down. Yes, telemedicine is now the new way of connecting with patients. Please understand he stated telemedicine will be utilized for consultations. Great work!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GOVERNOR.
That is a false fallacy,…
That is a false fallacy, living in US does not equate to knowing a lot! Machines are good but many have cited here we need to get the root of the problem; pesticides, GMO etc, Good optics for Mutua BUT that is not the solution , – another white elephant project .
If a county can do it, how…
If a county can do it, how about the federal government. Oh no, what it knows best is stealing and all other forms of corruption. Keep up Mutua. We are tired of the old political song “My government shall provide healthcare for all Kenyans “. That has proved to be all nonsense. It’s not even worth the breath that shouts it or the paper it’s written. Show us by action not by sheer talk. Mutua, kudos, keep on moving. Instead of tangatangaring, bring development to the people who elected you. Wacha wapiga midomo wamalize mate kwa kazi bure.
