The Coca-Cola Company is battling a court case filed by 58 Kenyan consumers who accuse it of selling them contaminated drinks.
The consumers from Busia County allegedly developed abdominal pains after taking the drinks and were admitted to different hospitals.
The incidents occurred in 2010 and the soft drinks manufacturer has been negotiating an out-of-court settlement but it failed after the victims rejected a compensation of Sh45,000 each.
A report by the then Busia County Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent Sande Charo shows that 60 patients were treated at the facility for abdominal pains as a result of consuming the drinks.
The report says the patients suffered acute abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, with general body weakness. They were treated for food poisoning and given antibiotics.
Two of the victims died later but their deaths are not related to the drinks.
Samples of the drinks taken by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) were found not to meet the required food standards.
On Monday, the High Court in Busia began pretrial of the case filed against the Atlanta-based company, its Africa subsidiaries (Coca-Cola Central, East, and West) and local agent Equator Bottlers Limited on behalf of the victims.
The case will continue on November 18th.
