Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero spent the night in police cells following his arrest on Friday morning.
Kidero will spend the weekend in police custody until Monday morning when he is expected to be arraigned and charged in court.
The politician was arrested in Nairobi on Friday morning by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over graft allegations.
He was arrested alongside John Ndirangu Kariuki (former Nairobi Mayor), Paul Mutunga Mutungi (former councilor) and George Wainaina Njogu (former Nairobi County Government Chief of Staff) over alleged irregular payment of Sh68 million by Nairobi County government to a law firm identified as M/s Wachira Mburu; Mwangi & Company Advocates.
The suspects are set to be charged with abuse of office, conspiracy to commit the offense of corruption, money laundering, and unlawful acquisition of public property among others.
In a statement, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji said there is sufficient evidence to support criminal charges against Kidero and the other suspects.
The suspects are being held in the EACC police station at the Integrity Centre.
Ningependa kusikia ya kwamba…
Ningependa kusikia ya kwamba Dada Waiguru, mkristo Ruto, Rotich wote wakiwa katika jela pamoja na ndugu Kidero.
If Uhuru and Raila are…
If Uhuru and Raila are serious about fighting corruption, then they need to enact strict legislation meant to fight impunity and blatant theft of public money. They have the numbers in both upper and lower houses. Let them reign in on their members of parliament to pass the the law that block rich people from frustrating justice system through buying their way out using the same money they steal from public coffers. It’s a shame that no rich person ever serve jail time for corruption! They only serve weekends in jail and never go to prison for corruption. They just buy out judges who then come up to say the prosecutors have no concrete evidence! Or they use existing statutes within current laws to buy time until everyone forget and they move on to another scandal. The only punishment these people ever gets is forfeiting their jobs, which is nothing being that they’ve stolen millions, sometimes even billions.
There should be a law forcing judges not to accept any bail and provide mandatory prison time for corruption. First world countries are already doing that. Why does Kenyan leaders allow legislations full of loopholes to be used by corrupt officials? Current justice system is leading to backlog full of petty crimes while major crimes and corruption is put in the back of the line hence taking years to be adjudicated and finally leads to nowhere after all papers are stollen by the same people in the justice system. All these can be taken care of through stringent legislation if we have a serious president. At the moment it’s all talks while blatant looting is going on while they keep borrowing with disregard.
