A Murang’a Member of County Assembly (MCA) has been arrested for allegedly conning a woman of Sh3 million.
Kagunduini Ward Representative Peter Mburu Muthoni was apprehended on Monday by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The politician is accused of obtaining the cash from the woman with a promise of awarding her a tender to supply construction materials (ballast) to a Chinese company building the Northern Tunnel Collector.
“The suspect together with others he had introduced as an ‘Engineer’ and a ‘senior staff’ at the Chinese company forged an agreement for the supply of ballast and in the process, they defrauded the victim the said amount,” says the DCI in a statement.
Detectives have also launched hunt for two of Mburu’s accomplices.
Appearing before Kigumo Law Court Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi on Tuesday morning, Mburu has been charged with conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretense and forgery.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been released on a bond of Sh1.5 million. The matter will be mentioned on April 16th.
Last year, Mburu was arrested and charged before Milimani senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuku for allegedly defrauding Gatitu self-help group of Sh1.2 million.
The prosecution said Mburu pretended he could help the society invest in shares. He is also facing several other separate fraud charges.
