Details about Likoni Member of Parliament Mishi Mboko brother’s death in Havana, Cuba have emerged.
The Star reports that Dr. Hamisi Ali Juma, who was found dead on Sunday, committed suicide because of depression.
Dr. Juma is among a team of 50 Kenyan medics sent to Cuba under government sponsorship to study Family Medicine.
In a joint statement on Monday, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho said Cuban authorities were investigating the death.
The Star reports Dr. Juma is said to have suffered serious depression before his death.
Last December, Juma allegedly made distress appeals to return to Kenya to take care of his ailing baby but the government turned down the request.
“He has been requesting the [Health] ministry to process his papers so he could travel back home to see his ailing baby but all efforts were been in vain,” a source told The Star.
Colleagues are said to have been helping him overcome his worries.
Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) chairman Samuel Oroko has blamed the government for his death.
“The government should bear full responsibility. The doctor had reported the matter to us and we tried to reach out to the government to help him but, unfortunately, our pleas fell on deaf ears,” Oroko says.
The official claims Cuba has failed to fully implement part of the MoU with the Kenya government.
Oroko says Cuban doctors in Kenya are pocketing huge salaries and allowances but their Kenyan counterparts in the Caribbean country are suffering.
“As we speak, they are not paid their allowances in time. The package was even slashed to 25 percent, and, in most cases, their salaries are delayed.”
He adds: “Cuban doctors are treated to free housing, free transport and full access to reliable internet, while our comrades are forced to pay for their houses and pay for fares, with no internet connectivity. This is unfair.”
He says the government must compel Cuba to honor the agreement or terminate the deal, and recall the doctors.

This is so unfortunate,but…
This is so unfortunate, but let’s not be so quick to blame the government for the Dr’s death
.We certainly dont know if he would have survived had he come back.Yes he missed his baby, but I sure she was in able hands and with other loving relatives. It is also unfortunate that missing loved ones left behind is one of the cost we pay for being away.
It appears that lately for one reason or another there has been an increase in suicide rate among Kenyans, both at home and in diaspora. We need our experts to look into this…
