US, Police Urge Kenyans to be Alert after Saturday Explosion in Nairobi CBD

Following Saturday evening explosion in Nairobi Central Business District, police have urged Kenyans in the city and across the country to remain alert.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) has urged matatu operators to make sure passengers, especially those carrying luggage, are thoroughly frisked before boarding their vehicles.

“We advise PSV operators to monitor the behavior of their passengers and be wary of persons who may board with luggage and thereafter attempt to alight without the baggage,” reads part of the statement.

Police have also urged those in charge of shopping malls, worship centers, education institutions and any other public places to ensure those entering the joints are taken through security checks.

“Frisk all persons entering the premises and promptly notify the police should there be anything unusual. We also wish to inform the public that whilst we have stepped up alertness on our highways, all Police Commanders have been instructed to apply to a court of law for forfeiture of any vehicle found with illegal immigrants and any form of contraband.”

In a statement through its Twitter account, the US embassy in Nairobi has also urged members of the public to exercise caution while in public places.

“A small explosion has been reported in the vicinity of Nairobi’s Central Business District. Avoid the area and move to a known safe location. Monitor local media for updates. Notify friends and family of your safety.”

Speaking at the scene on Saturday night, Nairobi regional police commander, Philip Ndolo, said the suspected IED explosion emanated from a box that was being ferried by a cart puller at the Tom Mboya-Latema Road intersection.

Ndolo says an unidentified man had hired the cart puller by the name Joseph Okinyi to carry the luggage. As they walked, the suspect claimed he had forgotten his identity card and pretended to go back for it.

Shortly after, the package exploded injuring the cart puller and another man who was selling books along the street.

“He told him he had forgotten the ID card and pretended to go for it. One newspaper vendor was also injured on the left leg following the explosion,” says Ndolo.

Police have launched investigations into the 7 pm incident.

The police service has adopted the same attitude as the boy in statehouse. Citizens security is their responsibility. Why are they paying taxes then?
