Governor Mike Sonko Announces Final List of Two Female Candidates for Vacant Nairobi Deputy Governor Seat

Governor Mike Sonko says that only two candidates are currently being considered for the vacant Nairobi Deputy Governor seat.

Sonko says there is likelihood that Jane Weru or lawyer Karen Nyamu may occupy the seat that fell vacant after the resignation of former holder Polycarp Igathe early this year.

Ms Karen Nyamu, a lawyer, sought to run for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in the last elections but lost the race for Jubilee party ticket to Rachel Shebesh.

On the other hand, Ms Weru is the executive director of a non-profit organization called Akiba Mashinani Trust that deals with housing development and finance. She is also a trained lawyer.

Earlier, Sonko shortlisted four female candidates for the seat. They included former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, gender activist and insurance executive Agnes Kagure, Ms Nyamu and Ms Weru.

Governor Sonko is reportedly still consulting with the Jubilee Party leadership before picking out the final nominee and submitting her name to the County Assembly for vetting and approval.

In May, Sonko tabled for vetting and approval the name of deported lawyer Miguna Miguna but the Assembly nullified the nomination on grounds that his Kenyan citizenship was revoked.

We’ve ourselves to blame on this, we had other candidates and voted for this one. Why this extended scrutiny on female candidates, yet he nominated Miguna without any scrutiny?
