Kenya Acquires Narcotics Sniffer Dogs for JKIA Ahead of Nonstop Flights to the US

Kenya has purchased three sniffer dogs that will be used to detect drugs and explosives at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) ahead of Kenya Airways’ direct flights to the United States.

Kamau Ng’ang’a, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Enforcement Manager announced the agency acquired three sniffer dogs to enhance the authorities’ ability to bust narcotics and explosives at JKIA as well as Mombasa’s Moi International Airport.

The official said the three will join a fourth German Shepherd given to Kenya by the US and will be manned by 10 specially trained handlers.

“We are ready and set for the US-Kenya direct flights and this has seen us re-align our strategies to ensure all parcels and carrier bags are checked for prohibited drugs or explosives. We have also acquired new scanners from China that supplement the work of the dogs,” he said.

“Our main role is to assess, collect and receive payments but must also ensure illegal substances are not passed through Kenya to other markets. We are glad Kenya now has dog-training schools that will supplement foreign dog-training for enhanced results,” Mr Ng’ang’a said.

This comes a week after US granted Kenya the final nod to launch nonstop flights to JKF International Airport in New York which is scheduled for October 28th.
