Following an investigate report by Citizen television about a Kenyan man who allegedly murdered his nephew in order to claim his life insurance cover running to millions of shillings, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered for immediate legal action
The #MurderforProfit investigative piece done Citizen TV’s senior investigative reporter Purity Mwambia exposed a disturbing story where a 27-year-old man was murdered by his uncle who wanted to benefit from the deceased’s life insurance policy.
It is alleged that Evans Masaku Kasyoki arranged for the life insurance policy in the name of his nephew and then allegedly planned for his murder. After the body of 27-year-old Eric Makau Musyoka was found dumped in a thicket near their home in Machakos, his uncle immediately commenced the insurance claim.
“The DPP’s attention has been drawn to a news feature appearing on Citizen TV prime time news in regard to the Kangundo incident. Due to the nature of the case, the DPP has directed that immediate legal steps be taken to ensure justice is done,” the DPP said in a tweet.
“The DPP further wishes to inform the public that obstruction of due process is serious criminal offence and any person who will be found culpable shall face full force of the law.”
Citizen TV established the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at Kangundo Police Station had issued an arrest warrant against the accused on August 22nd, 2017.
The warrant showed the suspect had involved in the killing of his nephew Eric Makau Musyoka who had a life insurance cover of Sh9 million — one worth Sh1 million with Jubilee Insurance and a second worth Sh8 million with AIG insurance.
A postmortem report revealed the deceased succumbed to a severe head injury from a blunt object.
While he denied he was with his nephew on the day he died, official call records obtained by the reporter indicate both Evans and the deceased were at Mbilini Hub all afternoon through to 10 pm on the fateful day.
While claiming the life insurance benefits, the suspect presented a death certificate of his nephew to both Jubilee and AIG insurance whose policy he had taken only 3 days before Eric’s death.
The death certificate he took to both the insurance companies bore a different serial number to the one the family of the deceased had obtained, indicating the accused might have fraudulently acquired the document.
The journalist also obtained WhatsApp conversations showing the suspect demanding that the payment process of the policy be expedited.
“I am still waiting to be contacted… You have decided to ignore me but sort my claim. Its now one year, conclude this matter, i will never give up on it Do you care? I will never give up, i will fight till the end,” reads a series of messages.
The insurance firms became suspicious when Evans claimed that he was moving to Australia, thus, the payment process should be quickened.
