Kenyan MPs could soon get a pay increment if recommendations of a House Committee are adopted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Parliament’s Services and Facilities Committee, which is chaired by Nyaribari Masaba MP Ezekiel Ombaki made the recommendations after benchmarking tours in the UK and Northern Ireland on how lawmakers in those countries are accorded services to perform their duties effectively.
In its report, the Committee says the salaries given to MPs is not at par with what other state officers such as judges and Cabinet Secretaries receive.
Further, the team also wants mechanisms put in place to make sure MPs are given a monthly statement of their allowances, both in the chamber and committees.
In addition, the Committee wants members be given full per diems and be allowed to facilitate their own accommodation whether in the country or abroad.
On July 1st, 2017, the SRC slashed MPs basic pay to Sh621,000 down from Sh710,000 a month and scrapped the annual progression rate for the legislators. Also reduced by the Commission was the basic salaries of Speakers of both the Senate and the National Assembly from Sh1.3 million to Sh1.2 million.
“With regard to the salaries and allowances of the members, the salary given to the MPs is not at par to salaries of state officers such as judges and cabinet secretaries,” part of the Parliament Committee reads.
The Committee further wants SRC to increase mileage allowance and car grant given to MPs as well as introduce house allowance for them.
The House team also wants facilities in the Parliament including the gymnasium, which they said is not adequate and not well maintained, be improved. It also wants internet services in Parliament improved and the lactating policy agreed upon in 2014 implemented.
How come these devils also…
How come these devils also pretend to fight corruption? There is no way even majambazi Uhuru,Ruto and muuaji Raila can fight corruption yet they are involved in institutionalized or legal corruption passed by bongolala Kenyans in which they receive shs 2b.per year for owning useless polical parties.DAWA-BLOODY REVOLUTION plus FIRING SQUAD.
These Waheshimiwa should…
These Waheshimiwa should only receive a quarter of the current money that they are stealing from our treasury.
What have they done in order to ask for a pay raise?
Let us not take them seriously until they work together to end corruption as we know it and also tell us the people responsible for the death of Mheshimiwa Jacob Juma and Mheshimiwa Chris Msando.
Poor kenyans, how in the…
Poor kenyans, how in the world would they bench much themselves with a well developed economy and all they see is how lowly they are paid, I wish we could just do without this brarykubafu gluttons. Where did we go wrong kenyans
How can MPS ask for a pay…
How can MPS ask for a pay raise when they are making way more than they are worth?.The internet they have in parliament should be sufficient, if its not they can contribute enough money for the upgrade, as for the gym, the MP’S are the ones benefiting from the facilities, so it’s only fair to the mwananchi for the MPS to support themselves.
Not 3 months pass before…
Not 3 months pass before these greedy Mpigs revive their quest for more money. How long would you last on your job if you kept nagging your employer for more money each time you see him,or her?Mpigs should by now have learned that there never is enough pay,for most of the hard working wananchi. One just has to live within their paycheck, quit ,or supplement whatever they are getting(legally). This is simple personal budgeting .
Why do you run for office knowing the pay scale is not sufficient for you?Or does it come as a shock at how little you get once you become an Mpig?
I think during campaign, Mpigs should state what they want as salary and let wananchi decide if they are worth it.There should be a base salary, above which wananchi should pay based on aset of calculus.
This is a shame. What exactly have they done since landing in the parliament this year?Unemployment is still high, crime is going through the roof, Alshabab is still terrorizing Kenyans, corruption scandals are unfolding every day, rape is on the increase, cats are being sold for human consumption,RAO is still agitating, Miguna is still lodged in Canada, culprits of the poisonous sugar are still at large,…
Nothing has changed for what we are paying these deadwoods
Kenya Mpigs are our current…
Kenya Mpigs are our current time Pharisees & tax collector who were/are hated by everybody because of their greed
How about we ask that these…
How about we ask that these MP’s to work part-time and we slice their pay in half. This will help our economy as they will not have time to travel. The extra money they are looking for, they can earn it by working for themselves when we don’t need them. Kenyans are tired of paying these corrupt idlers (busy bodies). Besides, if they are paying better in UK and Northern Ireland, why don’t these MP’s go and work there.
Show us (Wananchi) what you…
Show us (Wananchi) what you have done and we will decide. If done any other way, it’s theft by servant, abuse of office or whatever it’s called, but it’s a CRIME against Kenyans! We care, do you?
