Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has denied hiding keys to CEO Ezra Chiloba’s office.
Reacting to reports that he had jetted out of the country with the keys to prevent the suspended CEO from accessing his office, Chebukati said he did not carry the keys because he’s not the commission’s janitor.
On Wednesday, Chiloba went to Anniversary Towers in Nairobi only to find new locks fixed to his office door. When he asked to be granted access to the office, the CEO was told Chebukati traveled out of the country with the keys.
In a tweet, IEBC responded to the claims saying; “It’s just some coincidence that Chebukati was away. He is the Chairman, he does not carry any office keys. He is not the janitor.”
Taking to Twitter using his personal handle Chebukati said: “I was going to joke that my wife has them [keys] in her handbag but this is the correct position.”
Last week, Chebukati ordered locks to Chiloba’s office changed to prevent him from accessing it. This was after the Employment and Labor Relations court reinstated him back to office.
The court said IEBC violated the law in sending Chiloba on a three-month compulsory leave. Chebukati sent Chiloba home in March to pave way for a probe into the procurement of elections materials used in last year’s general elections.
Chiloba challenged the decision in court, arguing that he was not given a chance to defend himself.
