Governor Mike Sonko could be forced to nominate another candidate for Nairobi Deputy Governor after the County Assembly on Tuesday rejected deported lawyer Miguna Miguna’s name.
Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi said Miguna’s name had been sent back to Sonko for further consideration because the House was not in a position to debate the suitability of the nominee.
“Under Standing Order 1 of the House, the name of the nominee be referred back to the appointing authority for further validation,” she said.
The Assembly cited Article 78 of the Constitution which prohibits a dual citizenship holder from taking any State office.
Sonko nominated the self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general to the position in a letter sent to Elachi on May 16th.
“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” read part of the letter.
“The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”
The position fell vacant after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January, citing failure to win Governor Sonko’s faith.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Sonko said Miguna was the man with what it takes to kick cartels out of City Hall.
“I settled on Miguna Miguna so that he can help me in fighting the cartels. I know that Miguna is the number one ‘anti-cartel’ ,” said Sonko in a past interview.

Sonko does not want a Deputy. One wonders how he was able to assess Miguna’s qualifications, and why he did not include same when he forwarded his name to the County assemble in support of the vetting process.

Imara could you please, for the umpteenth time, google the word jurisdiction? Kenyan courts have no say when a passenger, Miguna in this case, is not domicile in Kenya. Until you are cleared by immigration in the US, you have no reprieve from the US courts and the same applies to the Kenyan immigration and the Kenyan courts. Your attempt to ignore the fact that Miguna 1) Is Not a Kenyan citizen and 2) Has broken Kenyan immigration laws does not make activist judges correct in their erroneous Judgement.

Kudos Nairobi County Assembly. You have laid open Sonko’s folly. If he’s serious about nominating a DG, there are many qualified people in the list he gave to the county constituents to comment on. Sonko, Nairobi residents are not your children to play games with. You are afraid to nominate a Deputy to avoid him/her outshining you or running against you in 2022. Stop mocking Miguna. He’s enough problems already to handle.
