Kenya Government Launches Free Milk Program for School Children

The government has revived the free milk program for more than 200,000 school-going children across the country.

The program was launched by the Ministries of Education and Health, in collaboration with dairy company Brookside.

Speaking during the launch, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed said more than 300 primary schools in Nairobi and its environs will benefit from the program.

The program will see more 200,000 pupils supplied with milk from Brookside, with the company spending Sh12 million if the kids drink the milk daily.

“This programme will encourage young children to eat foods that will feed their brains, to assist with boosting memory, having a sharper mind and the general feeling of good mental health,” CS Amina said during the official launch at Moi Educational Centre in Nairobi.

“Health eating and ensuring a child is eating balanced diet helps to keep more children in school,” she added.

The Ministry of Education said it will use the program to guarantee the right for education for every child.

Retired President Daniel Moi run a similar program for all schools in the 1980s, which was fully funded by the government.

Why is Brookside supplying the milk, just asking? Why not another company not connected to Uhunye. Is this not corruption, using power and influence to sell milk which in turn benefits you and family? Why Nairobi? When can every child in Kenya start drinking this milk?

If Kenya has such funds, why not allow counties to locally guarantee every kid one meal a day. What is this milk? Symptoms of what was fed to the kids will show up in a few years. Anything going to someone’s body whether medicine or food individuals and parents should be able to decide if it’s good for them or not. No wonder we have so many sick people in Kenya. What is happening? ” Create dependency, you create power and need for yourself”. Leave the decision to parents and kids, it’s them that deal with the consequences when things go wrong.

If it’s about our kids, what need to be guaranteed is one complete meal a day of a balanced diet. Not just milk.

Why can’t they buy books and desks with that money instead of milk. Books can be used for a number of years. When I was in primary school during those old good days. We reused ‘Read with Us’, ‘Hello Children’ etc.

I remember maziwa ya nyayo, I think it was Tuesdays and Thursdays, and that was the best memories I have of high school , a snack at 2pm …… One step at a time, then followed with a full meal. The problem with us Kenyans, when one good deed is done, we want instant gratification for the full nine yard. A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step….give kudos to Amina, and I agree there should have been a vetting of suppliers and shame on Uhuru for even getting his co in the mix…Kenyans need to protest often for such things this kind of non vetted supplying system we seem to have in that country.
